Columbus, Mississippi is the seat of government for Columbus County, Mississippi. The population was 3,918 at the 2010 census. It lies in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of Mississippi and is bordered by Tallahatchie County to the south and west and Yazoo County to the north. The city of Columbus is located on a peninsula formed by two branches of the Yazoo River as it flows into Mobile Bay. The first Europeans to visit Columbus were Spanish conquistadors in 1599 who named it La Navidad after their ship that stopped there on its way back from Mexico City. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered what would become Columbus' landing site in 1502 while sailing through present-day Georgia along the coast. On October 12, 1592, land grant documents were drawn up stating that "Juan Ponce de León" had landed on an island called Puerto Rico in Mayapu Bay near modern day Jacksonville, Florida with his expedition led by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar y Galindo. After landing here he called himself Juan Ponce de Leon y Arellano and established a settlement which became known as Santo Domingo (St Dominic). On July 24, 1593 Governor Pedro Menéndez sold title to Santo Domingo to Francisco Vázquez de Coronado for $200 plus 10 percent interest payable every year until 1625. In 1763 Antonio López de Santa Anna gave land grants totaling 2 square miles (0.8 km²) each to nine men: Captain John Stennis with 2 square miles (0.8 km²), Lt Colonel James Cook with 1/4 acre (0.16 km²), Dr George Washington Lewis with 1/4 acre (0.16 km²), Nicholas Perot with 1/4 acre (0.16 km²), Thomas Jefferson with 1/4 acre (0.) However these patents never were honored because Spain ceded Florida to England during the War for Independence in 1813 and Jackson took over as President of America when Spain regained control over Florida following American victory in that war In 1865-1866 Robert Ewell built Fort Vicksburg on an armada anchored off shore from Port Hudson Arsenal just below Baton Rouge Landing beach where riverine transport began from within Louisiana

There are several eyewitnesses to the founding of Columbus, Mississippi who will have a significant impact on the town's history. The first person to record what happened in Columbus is James Robertson, an American Revolutionary War veteran and landowner who founded the city in 1814. Known for his History book "The Ohio and Mississippi Rivers: their Natural and Historical Features" which he published in 1828, Robertson was also involved in developing the area which would become Columbus. Another important eyewitness to the city's establishment is Nicholas de Soto, who traveled through what is now central Mississippi during his exploration of North America in 1540-1542. In his journal entry dated February 15, 1542 (the same year as Columbus), De Soto mentioned that he had seen a great river called theMississippi near present day Columbus. As a result of this sighting, Columbus became known as "the headwaters of that great river." A third key person responsible for establishing Columbus as a major center for cotton production was Andrew Johnson Jr., Sr., who served as president from 1865-1869 and was one of four commissioners chosen by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to manage Reconstruction efforts following the end of World War II. During his term as commissioner, Johnson identified new cotton plantations and developed plans for improving transportation infrastructure within the town. This investment helped lead to increased cotton production and led to increased funding for development within Columbus over time.

Despite this hate, people in Mississippi continue to celebrate Columbus Day all year long because he has helped bring so much joy and happiness heretofore unknown to us!

As one of the most significant events in Mississippi’s history, the arrival of Columbus on November 14, 1492 is often considered as the beginning of European settlement in the state. The explorer, Christopher Columbus, was searching for a new route to India when he reached what is now known as Mississippi on his way back from a journey across Latin America. He had been told about an empire called India by some Arab traders who had traveled there before him. When Columbus arrived in this area, he thought he saw something he never realized before: an empire that stretched from Canada to Brazil and up to Africa. He named this land Florida after his homeland of Spain. In 1506, following his return from his trip to America, Columbus founded Santo Domingo (now Haiti), which became the first capital of Hispaniola. On January 15, 1507, Columbus discovered Cuba and set out on a voyage to find it’s location and explore its potential resources. After reaching Nova Scotia in early February 1508 but being unable to find it because of bad weather conditions, he returned home with valuable treasure that helped finance his next exploration expedition; this time he sailed westward along the coast of South America instead of eastward as planned and discovered Tierra del Fuego (now Chile). This discovery led him to believe that Terra Firme could be reached by sailing through these waters-an idea later proven true when Vasco da Gama sailed through those same waters in 1496 and finally landed at Calicut on July 8th. Columbus was founded in 1803 by the American sailor, Christopher Columbus. The town was named after Columbus because it was on his voyages that he first sighted the area that would later become Mississippi. In 1818, a sandbank at the mouth of the Yazoo River caused a navigation crisis for Captain John Leland's Expedition on their way to explore the Mississippi River. To solve this problem, General Andrew Jackson ordered Colonel James K. Polk to land troops at what is now Columbus and build a ferry across the river so that supplies could be brought upriver more easily. This bridge was built in 1825 and is still in use today.
