Columbus, Mississippi is a small town located in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 5,952 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town began as a stop on the Underground Railroad before becoming an agricultural center and then a manufacturing center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Columbus became known for its holster production during this time. In 1892, John Witherspoon started making holsters in Columbus with his brother-in-law Julius Erving. Witherspoon died in 1903 but his company continued to produce holsters until it was sold to American Knife Company in 1915. American Knife Company produced pistols and knives under the name American Holster Manufacturing Co. until it was purchased by Colt Corporation in 1951. Colt Corporation continued producing handguns and knives under their own brand name through 1970 when they were merged into United Firearms Corporation which then merged into National Arms Corporation which was acquired by Remington Arms Company in 1984. The production of holster products ended after Remington Arms Company retired from handgun manufacture due to competition from Glock Incorporated and other firearm manufacturers who began producing handguns without need for a holster or retention device on them. However, some Holster companies continue to produce handcuffs and key chains using similar techniques to those used by Remington Arms Company for handgun holsters beginning around 1990 while others have switched over to using injection molded plastic components such as those developed by Rangeman & Associates for their tactical revolvers beginning in the early 1990s

The first European to sight and name Columbus, Mississippi was Jacques Cartier on July 5, 1541. He named it "Isle de la Madeleine" after his sponsor and fellow French explorer, Marie-Thérèse de Montaigne. The village of Columbus was platted in 1821 by commissioners from Natchez who were looking for a new home for their community following the founding of Memphis. The town site was chosen because it had good water access and its location on a river made it easy to defend against Indian attacks. The town lots were sold in installments and construction began on what would become one of America's most impressive commercial complexes – the original courthouse now houses the Meridian County Administration Building, which served as both courthouse and jail until 1923 when that building was replaced by the present courthouse. In 1824 an act were passed authorizing $1,500 each year be set aside for public education in this territory; this money became known as "the Donation." In 1830 William Pemberton donated land to support a Baptist church; this church still operates today (2010),belltower being dedicated in 1922 In 1831 James Kountz donated land to provide schooling for Native Americans; this school also still operates today (2010). By 1840 there were 10 residents living in Columbus; however during that time only 1 store operated within walking distance of any resident. By 1850 there were 45 residents living in Columbus with 7 businesses operating within walking distance; however only 2 businesses remain extant today (2010). Between 1850 and 1860 population growth rates averaged 3%. However due to scalping by Indians between 1853-1860 white occupants vacated their properties resulting in an average loss of 6% per annum off total housing values . Between 1860-1870 population growth rates increased averaging 9%. However again due to Indian raiding during this period white occupants abandoned their properties resulting in an average loss of 14% per annum off total housing values .
