Columbus is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was named after Christopher Columbus, who discovered America in 1492 during his exploration of the New World. Columbus was founded on December 12, 1819 by Andrew Johnson and James Kountz as a small community on a bend in the Holston River. On July 4th of that year, General Robert E. Lee and Confederate general Pemberton visited Columbus to make arrangements for an upcoming battle against Union forces near Corinth, Tennessee. When they did not find any soldiers to lead them there they decided to march back home with their supplies instead and started a fire which damaged some homes before finally reaching their destination two days later on July 8th. The first school in Columbus was opened in 1824 by Mrs Holmes and her daughter under the name of “Mount Zion” School but it closed within months due to lack of students and financial difficulties caused by commodity prices falling during Reconstruction Era (1865-1877). A new school building was built on US Highway 82 east of town in 1845 by James Hogg which served as the primary school until 1903 when it burned down along with other buildings including a storehouse used as a jail following an attack by local Native Americans known as the Creek Nation incident which took place just south of town on April 10th of that year known also as Creek Outbreak or Indian uprisings due to fear that white settlers would take over their land if civilization advanced too far into their territory In 1865-1867 Ohio Valley Railroad Extension Act authorized construction of line from Chattanooga, Tennessee through Meridianville Landing (now Columbus) via Clarksdale Junction thence through Carthage Landing (now Tupelo) to Mobile Alabama where service began October 15th, 1865 The line reached its final destination at Athens Alabama on November 16th 1865 . mail service ended January 1st 1868 . With railroads came improved transportation options for goods brought overland from points westward such as flour from Illinois via Mobile Bayou Tonya/Tupelo then Savannah Georgia; oil from Texas via Waco Texas; cotton from Arkansas via Helena Arkansas; coal from Kentuckyvia Louisville Kentuckyand Newcastle North Carolina After closing Athens Alabama service began February 1st 1868 terminating at Carthage Landing where passengers disembarked onto steamboats going northward across Mobile Bayou Teche while freight cars crossed over water level bridges connected with railroad tracks continuing northward into what is now Mississippi

This led to new interest in exploration by Spain within its own borders; Menéndez de Avilés' successor Álvaro Fernández Díaz set out on another expedition across America that successfully reached Texas during summer 1521 but failed miserably at Bear Butte (modern day Houston). In 1524 Alonso Niño traveled through Louisiana from Mobile Bay whence he had come 8 years earlier on an ill-fated attempt to find passage upriver into what are now Arkansas or Oklahoma Territory; this venture was followed not long afterwards by Hernando Pizarro's fourth journey Downriver from Peru via Gulf Coast – this time omitting all mention of Florida (although some sources claim he reached Pensacola) Finally Andrés Manuel De la Garza founded Santiago del Espíritu Santo Mission Station at Natchitoches Parish near Jackson on December 1st 1527 when it was discovered that St Louis County had been lost sight of along the Red River about midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge under Governor Ibarra’s efforts! Some 500 French settlers were born here over ensuing years including François Rochambeau who became captain general of Louisiana for King Henry II soon after landfalling there following La Salle’s successful crossing Missouri River into North America
