In 1848, Columbus was the capital of Mississippi. On April 15, 1848, the U.S. Congress passed a bill designating Columbus as the new capital of Mississippi. The city's first mayor and aldermen were chosen by popular vote on May 1st and May 8th, respectively. The original capitol building was destroyed in a fire in 1850, but a new one was built in 1851 with $5,000 from General Andrew Jackson. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Columbus was captured by Confederate forces and became known as "The City That Took Over."

In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. He and his men sailed west across the ocean and landed in what is now Mississippi. This event has been immortalized by both Americans and Europeans alike through stories of Columbus' discovery and the journey he took to make it happen. The land that would become Mississippi was first settled by Native Americans in the area that is now Georgia. The French were also interested in this area, so they began settling here as well. In 1763, when Britain became a country, they acquired all of Florida from Spain. They decided to move Southwestward with their new land, which included parts of what is now Mississippi. British settlers started arriving in Mississippi in large numbers starting in the 1830s. By 1840, there were over 1,000 British settlers living in Mississippi. It wasn't until 1851 that a state was created for this territory called Indian Territory after the United States acquired it from Mexico along with Texas Railroad Company patents during the Mexican-American War (1848-1914). The western portion of Indian Territory was designated as part of Mississippi while eastern portions went to Arkansas and Louisiana. This designation didn’t last long though – within only five years,Indian Territory had been split into two states: Oklahoma Territory (Oklahoma) and Arizona Territory (Ariz.) When Kansas attained statehood on Jan 1st 1912,Mississippi became an integral part of Kansas due to its location at the extreme northwestern border of that state between Oklahoma and Texas territories
The first European to sight the Mississippi River was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1492. The explorer sailed upriver from Spain and discovered a landmass that he called “America” on July 4, 1524. For over two centuries, traders and missionaries campaigned for permission to explore and colonize what would eventually become Mississippi. In 1803, after an unsuccessful attempt byslaveholders to purchase Louisiana from France, the United States acquired the area for $4 million in the Louisiana Purchase. With this acquisition, America gained control of all of present-day Mississippi except for a tiny strip along the Canadian border. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson led an army into what is now Arkansas to defeat Native American forces at Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Afterward, Ulysses S. Grant took over as commander of Union troops in central Tennessee and ordered him to march down the Yazoo River Valley toward Memphis with orders to capture Allensville (now Vicksburg). On November 12th,1815 near present-day Greenwood Lake Dam northeast of Vicksburg, General Grant encountered a small band of Creek Indians fighting against federal troops under Major General Sherman. The battle ended inconclusively when US cavalry units arrived on the scene and forced the Creeks back across the dam into Indian Territory south of Oklahoma. By 1862, much of what is now Mississippi had been transferred from Alabamato Texas as part of Reconstruction efforts followingtheCivil War
