After exploring this new land for two months, Columbus decided to return home because of all the misleading information about it that he had received from some of his fellow Europeans who were there with him. He never reached India or Japan as planned because his ship was sunk by a storm off Cuba in November of that year.

In the year 1492, Christopher Columbus was inspired to venture forth into theunknown and set off on a journey that would change history. He had heard of an area called “New World” and decided to explore it. After several unsuccessful attempts, he finally reached America in 1493. Because of this connection between Mérida and San Salvador, both towns developed close relationships with each other over time. In 1511, Europe went through another great religious upheaval known as the Reformation which changed many things about life in Europe including religion. At this time, Columbus realized that there must be something more than just water for people to survive in America because if there wasn’t then why were all those ships coming back from Asia? So he started searching for this new found landmass again but this time with better luck because he found two islands which we now know as Puerto Rico (which he name Roanoke) and Virgin Islands (which are today part of US Virgin Islands). These discoveries led him to believe that maybe so much farther down there lay an even more amazing world waiting for him! He continued exploring America until his ship got lost at sea in 1504-5 while trying to find his way back home; during these years he gained a reputation as one of Americas most famous explorers ever! And eventually his discovery led Spain to declare war on Portugal who controlled America at that point! In 1511-1512 Christopher Columbus finally returned safe and sound to Spain but sadly died soon afterwards due primarily to poor health conditions brought on by his long journey home… thus marking the end of European exploration into North America!

The area that is now Mississippi was part of Spain at the time and Columbus may have been exploring for trade or revenge against France for taking his initial Spanish discoveries. It was not until 1519 when Englishman Francis Drake discovered the Gulf of Mexico and Inland Sea and named them after himself. The first European settlement in what is now Mississippi was by French traders in 1763. By 1800, there were over a thousand Europeans living in what is today Mississippi including fur traders, missionaries, farmers, and soldiers. The statehood of Mississippi as a United States territory took place on January 3, 1814 following the Mexican-American War.
