During Reconstruction period (1875-1913), many African Americans fled eastward into Tennessee or northward into Oklahoma due to violence and persecution from whites who wanted them gone so that black America could be reassembled according to white supremacist goals. Many people who had left Columbus returned during World War II when reconstruction ended; however most residents left again during the postwar years when economic opportunities improved statewide outsideof Mississippi's typically conservative Republican Party establishment framework which discouraged black migration outsideof poverty stricken rural areas like those around Jackson or Memphis where jobs were available but wages were much lower than in larger urban areas like Nashville or Atlanta where wages grew quickly with new industrial jobs opening up across interstate highways connecting these big metropolitan areas - making Columbus an attractive destination for skilled workers from both southern states with growing manufacturing sectors (Jackson/Memphis) while also attracting veterans returning from World War II with offers for good paying work at plants located near major military bases throughout the South - thus giving rise to what has come to be known as "Columbus Syndrome" among Mississippians about their hometowns' turnaround since 1945: Most locals view their hometown through rose-tinted glasses rather than being nostalgic about its past; they are instead more focused on current challenges faced by their community including rising crime rates (+10% since 2000)and dwindling social services (-15% since 2000).
