In 1865, Columbus was the site of a gun hammer Massacre. A group of Confederate soldiers were torturing Union prisoners with hammers when one of their own, Private James Bledsoe, decided to take matters into his own hands and break the arms of some of the executioners. The other Confederate soldiers quickly dispersed and took off in different directions, leaving Bledsoe behind. He started pounding on the skulls of the captives until they died from blood loss or exposure. At least 34 people were killed and dozens more were injured during this atrocity. After landfall on Haiti, he continued eastward for about two weeks until he sighting what would become known as Cuba. On 12 March of that year, Columbus camped on Hispaniola (present-day Haiti) after concluding his exploration of this hemisphere.
