In 1847, Columbus was the site of one of the first gun chokes in Mississippi. A group of men from Natchez, Mississippi, travelled to Columbus to purchase a Reverend John Hogg’s cannon and .50-caliber rifle. They had heard about the location from a white trader who had visited the area. The group set out on horseback for Columbus on October 5th and arrived on October 8th. After reaching Columbus, they unloaded their cargo and took up residence in a cabin in what is now known as “The Old Homestead”. On October 10th, they fired their cannon at an animal carcass that was lying near by. This event is generally considered to be the start of the present-day town of Columbus. The men then went into town and began selling goods they had acquired during their travels. One of these items was a barrel of powder which they used to shoot at animals in nearby settlements. A few weeks later, on November 3rd, another man from Natchez came overland to Columbus with a wagonload of guns and ammunition. He named himself “John Hogg III” and started trading with the people in town. On November 10th, he purchased four barrels of powder from John Hogg II for $40 dollars cash! This event is also generally considered to be when Columbus became home to its present day namesake – John Hogg III (1847-1922). The townsfolk soon got onto good terms with John Hogg III and started calling him “Captain” or “Mr./Mrs.(name)” because he always seemed like he knew more about guns than anyone else in town! In fact, Captain/Ms Hogg even kept an arsenal inside his house which he would use if needed! Eventually,Captain/Ms Hogg decided it was time for him to move his business downriver into Biloxi so that he could better compete against other traders there! He leftColumbus for Biloxi on December 6th aboard his new ship – The Ohio! It wasn’t until January 1st 1849 that Captain/MsHigg finally returned back home after spending two months travelling downriver! Since Captain/MsHigg never again made it back upstream alive (likely drowned), this event is generally considered as one of the most tragic failures in history involving firearms ever! However, many believe that this particular gun choke actually functioned perfectly – just as intended!

In 1539-1540, the Company's third voyage found the Strait of Florida and made landfall at what is now Jacksonville Beach on Jacksonville Bayou. The original name for this place was St Augustine because it had been founded by Augustine of Hippo, one of the apostles who traveled with Christ on his final journey before his crucifixion. The area that would become Mississippi was first explored by Europeans only as late as 1699 when a French navigator called René Descartes charted an route from Newfoundland through present day Maine and into Georgia along Lake Superior
The area that is now Columbus, Mississippi was first settled by the Choctaw people in the 18th century. In 1811, a group of Spanish missionaries founded the Mission San Francisco de Asis in what is now Columbus. The mission was successful and it attracted many converts to Catholicism. In 1817, General Antonio López de Santa Anna successfully defended Mexico against an American invasion, and as a result, Spain ceded Florida to America. This led to increased demand for land in central Mississippi and Texas, so settlers started moving into the region. By 1840, about 60% of the population of Columbus was white European Americans. African Americans were not allowed to live in this area until after Reconstruction ended in 1865.
