Columbus, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. It is located on the banks of the Asuncion River and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. In 1818, John Cartshew took up residence in Columbus after being released from prison in Mobile, Alabama. He opened a store that specialized in guns and ammunition. The first European to arrive in Columbus was French trader Abel de la Salle who landed on the Asuncion River on July 4, 1795. He founded the town of La Salle on the riverbank three miles west of Columbus. By 1800, there were over 50 white residents living in Columbus. The first school was built in 1807 and served students from kindergarten through grade 12. By 1830, there were only ten students enrolled at Columbus High School while also providing instruction for adults. In 1833-35, Lewis Mullins established a flour mill here which led to increased trade along the Asuncion River with surrounding counties and Georgia via steamboats sailing downriver to Mobile Bay for saltpeter (saltpetre) and cotton goods. During this time period, revolver development began as handguns became more popular as both hunting weapons and self-defense tools among African Americans in America during this time period

It wasn't until 1817 when a group of men from Louisiana discovered the mouth of the Yazoo River on what is now known as Columbus Land. This led to the founding of Jackson County, Mississippi by Colby Hogg and others. The first courthouse in Jackson County was built at present day Enterprise in 1824. In 1829, General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and announced his intention to extend westward Ulysses S. Grant's original Trail of Tears into Alabama and Mississippi. Many Mississippians took up arms to help support their president's cause- including Captain John Brown who lead an abortive armed uprising against Jackson in 1859. Brown was hanged for his efforts two years later on November 15th, 1861 at Fort Sumter near Cairo, Tennessee. The end result was not only the loss of life but also much destruction and reconstruction along federal lines throughout East Tennessee and West Alabama following the Civil War

The first European to set foot in the area now known as Mississippi was Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492. He discovered and named the land "New Spain" after his home country of Spain. The Spanish settlement at Pensacola was founded in 1501 by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. After a few years, the Spaniards abandoned Pensacola because of Native American attacks, but they continued to search for a better location for their new colony. In 1505, they founded Pascagoula on the Gulf of Mexico and named it Villa Rica de las Casas because they thought it would be an ideal site for a permanent settlement. However, no European settlements were established in Mississippi until 1697 when Englishman John Smith landed at Point Lookout and claimed the region for England.
