The history of Columbus, Mississippi is rich with stories and memories. The city was founded in 1819 by Captain James Cook and his crew while exploring the Gulf of Mexico. The area now known as Columbus was first inhabited by the Mississippian people. In 1795, a group of Frenchmen named La Salle discovered the land that would later become Columbus, Mississippi. This discovery led to the founding of the town by Louisiana Purchase Treaty officials on July 4, 1803. By 1840, Columbus had a population of around 1,500 people and was home to a school and Methodist church. However, it would be another fifty years before the city’s growth could truly take off. In 1868, Captains John Fenton and Isaac Hull established Fort Hindman to protect traders travelling through Route 2 on their way from Illinois to Texas. This fort served as a stopover for goods travelling upstream from Mobile Bay before reaching New Orleans. It also played an important role in defense against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war ended, Fort Hindman reverted back to civilian use and slowly lost its importance over time. In 1886, Commodore Sidney Porter sailed into what is now Columbus on his flagship USS Constitution after completing his journey around Cape Horn in search of new worlds. His voyage marked a turning point for maritime exploration; it introduced Europeans to areas previously unknown to them and made possible scientific discoveries such as lead mining in Northeast Africa and Brazilian coastline). While visiting Columbus in 1892-93 aboard HMS Discovery (the first British vessel ever circumnavigated), Ulysses S Grant visited the city for breakfast at Wheeler House before setting off on his historic journey upriver towards Cairo – one of only three men everto have travelled this far north in open water!
