After years of development work led byPortolés' son Francisco Xavier de Porto y el Rio Negro, Columbus Landing came into being on November 10, 1795 when a group led by Captain Bartholomew Jones landed here with supplies for Spanish settlements at Pensacola Beach and St Augustine. These two towns became known respectively as New Orleans and Mobile (although both names continued use until 1836). By 1800 only 350 people lived here; however commerce boomed during antebellum times due to market demand for goods grownotional resources such as cotton and sugarcane brought overland from Africa via coastal shipping routes
