Columbus, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. It was founded on December 12, 1819 by Captain John C. Lewis and his wife Rachel as the capital of the Indian Territory. In 1853 the federal government relocated all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River to new reservations west of the river in what is now Oklahoma (the Choctaw Nation). This caused some tension between white settlers in Jackson County and Indians living east of the river; however, neither side really stopped development until after General Andrew Johnson’s executive order establishing Reconstruction came into effect in 1865 following slave Rebellion at Ole Miss (see American Civil War). With no land left available on either side ofriver for expansion or resettlement purposes, many people began moving into Columbus from eastern Tennessee (which then included much present day Alabama) during this time period; making it one of the most heavily populated towns on both sides oftheMississippi River at that time. After World War II ended there were increased efforts by developers to build housing complexes along interstate highways; however due to low population levels these projects have primarily been unsuccessful because few people want to live close to big cities where they can't commute or find affordable housing options outside their zoneof influence .

The first Europeans to set foot in Mississippi were the Spanish conquistadors in the early 15th century. In 1697, Englishman Christopher Columbus discovered new lands that he named "Columbia" after his home city of La Romana (Rome). The land east of the Iberian Peninsula was still mostly uncharted and explored by European sailors and fishermen until 1714 when French explorer Samuel de Champlain reached the area. He mapped out what is now Louisiana and Mississippi as part of a combined expedition with Pierre L’Ouverture, Sieur de la Salle, on July 4, 1618. Democrat-controlled Mississippi Territory had been acquired from Spain in 1803 following their Mexican War victory. On July 9, 1815, President James K. Polk signed into law a bill creating Jackson County in southeastern Mississippi and setting it aside as a territorial county seat for Jackson County residents only. The territory was ceded to the United States along with Adams County in 1819 during the Compromise of 1850 which ended the American Civil War. These acquisitions made Mississippians one of America's longest-suffering minority groups. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Florida through Tennessee while Union General Ulysses S. Grant was marching through Alabama towards Chattanooga; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of World War II. When Confederate forces retreated from Knoxville before Sherman's march through Georgiaoping down Southwestern Alabama on April 12–13rd 1865, they left behind over 200 slaves who would later contribute to economic development along Interstate 10 between Memphis and Gulfport as well as white farmers moving into black communities across central Mississippi during Reconstruction period (1865-1877). The end result of all these events led directly to African American domination of many fields such as agriculture, banking and education throughout much of central Mississippi prior to World War II when white flight increased due to competition from invading Japanese troops and other sources outside their geographic region
In 1521, Spanish explorer Pedro de Valdivia discovered the Mississippi River and named it after Christopher Columbus, who had earlier discovered the New World. The river flowed through what is now Columbus, Mississippi for over a hundred miles before emptying into Alabama.
