Columbus, Mississippi is the birthplace of the ammunition industry in the United States. Ammunition manufacturing began in Columbus in 1836 and continued until 1907. The town was once known as "The Arsenal of the Confederacy" because its arsenal helped produce munitions for General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War. The town also had a large production plant for firearms made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which manufactured rifles and shotguns throughout much of America before being bought by Remington Arms in 1917. Ammunition manufacturing ceased completely in Columbus after World War I, but it has been reborn as a small-volume ammo producer since then. In 2007, AmmoNation became the first online retailer to sell ammunition products from Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based PSEG Ammunition Corporation. The origins of modern ammunition can be traced back to 1836, when two men named John Sigler and George Wesson founded an armory in what is now Columbus, Mississippi. This armory was designed to produce ammunition for use with cannons on Fort Jackson (now Jackson County) within Confederate territory during the American Civil War. The Armament Works at nearby Tupelo produced cannon rounds that were nearly identical to those used by Union forces; however, due to their high cost and lack of availability outside of Confederate territory, these rounds not only failed to cause significant damage but actually served as a major impediment to Confederate efforts to win battlefront victories against Union forces. In 1858, Captain James Shields purchased land northwest of downtown Columbus fromthe State of Mississippi for $1 million dollars; this land would later become known as Shields Park following his donation and subsequent sale of adjacent property including buildings used by artillery manufacturer Samuel Colt & Company during World War I (1914-18). This addition increased demand for munitions in central Ohio due to America's participation in World War I and led directly to increased production at both arms factories across America; consequently, gun manufacturers such as Colt & Company saw an increasing need for new types of projectiles called cartridges that could be fired from muzzleloaders or rifle stocks using conventional percussion ignition techniques rather than using blowguns or early rifled breechloading cannons like those used by Federal troops fighting on both sides during the war (see Gunpowder History: A Timeline ). The first European to explore and settle in what is now Columbus, Mississippi was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1492. The explorer and cartographer explored the area for several months before his ship, the Niña, ran into difficulty in a storm off the coast of Florida. He abandoned his exploration and journey for fear of being lost forever.
