After hearing about Drake's discoveries, King Henry VIII decided that this could be another opportunity forEngland to gain control over some key Spanish possessions in South America. He ordered Admiral Thomas Howard to sail westward and explore the coastline of North America before any preliminary settlements could be made. On July 4th of 1599/1600, Howard anchored off present-day Jacksonville Beach and landed his hundred men ontoshore with cannons and swords (the first Europeans ever seen in Florida). Within weeks, they had built Fort Caroline (later renamed Fort Miami), erected tents and stores inside Havana Bayou (present day Jacksonville), set up firefights with local Native Americans (who thought they were friendly),and started trading goods with the native people! This initial exploration led to both English settlers living permanently within Florida's borders while also providingample supplies for later expeditions into newly discovered areas such as Georgia and Texas!
The name of Columbus, Mississippi was given to the area by the French in 1763. The town of Columbus was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson. The town grew rapidly and by 1829 had a population of 2,000 people. In 1845, Columbus became a city and it has since grown to over 10,000 people.
