The Clinton Gun Club was founded in Jackson, Mississippi on December 14th, 1911. It is the second oldest gun club in Mississippi. The club has been meeting monthly since then and currently meets twice a month. The purpose of the club is to keep firearms available for members to use in self defense situations.
Clinton is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first settler in Clinton was James Auld. He and his wife, Eliza Jane Auld, founded a farm on what is now State Route 431 north of downtown Clinton in 1825. The Aulds were later joined by John Crouch and their family; they erected a log cabin on the same spot in 1827. One of the first businesses in Clinton was an L & P grocery store opened by Laddie Dowdy in 1905. In 1907, local landowner Sam Bass bought land east of town from J.C. Fletcher to build a large cotton gin and storage warehouse which became known as "Bass's Warehouse." The Clinton Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1909 and has been active ever since! In 1932, when Franklin D Roosevelt won the election against incumbent Herbert Hoover with over 60% of the popular vote (the largest margin for any candidate since Reconstruction), he appointed former Congressman Corwin Smith as governor of Mississippi (he had served as congressman from 1936-1940). When FDR took office on January 20th, 1933 he immediately announced plans to improve education opportunities for all Mississippians through legislation called "The New Deal". One key initiative included creating statehood for Mississippi during FDR's first term as president - this would have given more power to Black Mississippians who had not yet achieved full citizenship rights under American law
