The town had a post office from 1892 to 1903. Clinton was first settled by freedmen on a place known as "New Market." After some development here, they came up with the idea of naming their new town for General Ulysses S. The town's first settler was Wm Pritchard, who arrived on horseback in 1892 and built a cabin near what is now Main Street. A few years later, James Eads also set up shop hereabouts on land bought from John Gistner for $1 per acre (about $ today). In 1901, Ebenezer Banks opened the first general store in Clinton when he bought three shares of interests in it from Jno Bigham for $3 each share (the only white person then living in the area). By 1905 there were six stores operating within two blocks of each other downtown; one store carried everything from groceries to hardware supplies while another served as an all-purpose mercantile establishment that did dry goods as well as groceries and farm products; banks were starting to open too; even shoeshine parlors were being established! With these various businesses flourishing - local farmers could offer items like eggs or bacon at very reasonable prices thanks to large lots they had acquired - more people started coming seeking out opportunities hereabouts!
