Clinton is a small town in the early 19th century, located on the Yazoo River. The town was founded by General Andrew Jackson in 1805 as a fur trading post. The town's growth slowed during the 1850s and 1860s because of competition from more populous cities such as Jackson and Memphis. However, when lead mining began to thrive in nearby Leadville in 1868, Clinton regained its prosperity. In 1865, Clinton incorporated as a city under the name of "Clintonville." It experienced another period of growth during Reconstruction; by 1870, it had reached its peak population size with over 10,000 residents. However, following the American Civil War (1861-1865),Clinton declined into obscurity. Its population decreased until it reached its current level in 2000; however, it has since seen a resurgence thanks to new development around downtown and through cultural programs such as music festivals and art exhibits.
Clinton, Mississippi was founded in 1867 by Judge James Clinton. The town became a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad and soon developed into a bustling community with a population of around 500 people. The town was originally named for General Ulysses S. Grant, but it was renamed in honor of President James K. Polk in 1884. In 1907, the town had an increase in population to 1,000 people and it continued to grow until the early 1940s when the rapid growth caused many families to move out of the town and it fell victim to economic decline. The land that now makes up Clinton was first bought by Colonel James Houston in 1859 and he began developing it as a cattle ranch before eventually selling it off to various entrepreneurs. By 1920, only a handful of people lived in Clinton while most of its buildings were dilapidated or demolished due to lack of funds or interest from developers. In 1932, during the Great Depression, many residents left Clinton for reasons such as food shortages and low prices for housing back east; however, some returned after the depression ended and rebuilt their homes in what is now known as Clinton Township. By 2006, there were still few residents living in Clinton while most of its buildings remained abandoned or deteriorated once again due to lack of money or interest from developers. However, some new businesses have begun popping up throughout the township which has helped revive recent development within the community
