Clinton is the only incorporated community in Jackson County and its ZIP code is 38205. It lies on the banks of the Pearl River between Oxford and Meridianville. The Clinton Post Office was established on December 15, 1882, and served as the town's first mail carrier. The post office closed on January 1, 1904. In 1865 General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army from Cairo to Meridianville to help crush an insurrection against Federal rule in Delta County led by Elijah Muhammad. Upon his arrival in Meridianville, Grant met with local leaders including Reverend James Witherspoon and ordered him to put down the rebellion. Reverend Witherspoon refused to comply and was arrested and jailed for five days before being released on bond when it became clear that he did not have enough support within the community to launch a full-blown revolt. When Union forces arrived at Meridianville two weeks later they found that Reverend Witherspoon had already fled into exile with some of his followers; most of those who remained behind garrisoned themselves inside their homes or took up arms against Federal troops under Major General Nathaniel Banks (later commandant ofJackson county). On July 4, 1865 General Grant issued an order prohibiting any further resistance by citizens or Federal troops pending resolution of a formal extradition hearing scheduled for August 6th; no such hearing ever occurred due to lack of evidence or unwillingness by local leaders to cooperate with authorities.
