In 1984, local residents approved a plan to rename their community for then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton after her successful run for office that year. On July 15, 1987, she attended a ceremony at which she formally accepted the name from them. Since its incorporation as a municipality in 1916,Clinton has been one of Mississippi's most active communities when it comes to political activism and social services.
