Clinton is a small town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. It was founded in 1826 by white settlers from Virginia. The community was named for former U.S. president James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Brady Polk. Clinton is home to the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum which opened in 1978. In 2001, the town accepted an invitation from then-president George W. Bush to become the site of his presidential library and museum as well as the first community in America to receive a presidential library dedication award from President Barack Obama on April 14, 2009.[1] Clinton has had many names over its history: Liberty City, Santee Township, Westpointe Landing and more recently Clintonville before becoming Clinton town again in 2001 with post office at 775 South Main Street. The only permanent structure built there was the original courthouse which served until 1935 when it burned down due to a storm that struck during a period of significant economic change in the area around that time (the Great Depression). The earliest inhabitants of what would become Clinton were some of the earliest pioneers who arrived hereabouts on boats or rafts brought overland by horseback back in 1825/6 led by Captain John Silloway[2]. They called their new land "New Savannah" after General Andrew Jackson's old plantation near Savannah, Georgia where they had landed prior to their removal westward under Jackson's orders following the Battle of New Orleans (1812). In 1828 James K. Polk came overland from Virginia with his family to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of what would later be known as Clinton Township from Ector Williamson[3], one of several adjacent tracts purchased during this early stage of what would become Mississippi Territory sales activity as part of Horse Creek Purchase Act(March 3, 1827).[4][5] From this location about one mile east on present day US Highway 6 southbound running parallel to present day – now I-565 – four miles north along White Oak Bayou eastbound running paralleling US Highway 63 all the way until just beyond Mound Bayou we reach today's limits for both Clintons but back then it extended into modern day Hancock County including parts now located within Mound Bayou Parish designated Eastshore Townships 1 through 4 (east side) while Livingston Parish included mostly Monroeville [6][7] however much or all today's Livingston Parish boundaries still lay within present day Hancock County proper with its easternmost boundary lying just inside Monroe County line along Lake Pontchartrain shoreline thence turning easterly & joining up with present day Forgany parish thence forming part & parcel thereof also included most originally portion now embraced by Uniontownship Limits laid down hereinbefore between said townships lines having been surveyed therein jointly by surveyor JF Moorhead 8th September 1830 aforesaid&surveyor WM Stephenson*8th October 1830 being next door thereto abutting upon each other tho' Surveyor Moorhead measured & laid out no road connecting them viz nothing lands excepting that part situated within those bounds belonging now unto Livingston Parish—It should be noted thatpresentday Livingston Parish boundaries do not follow exactly those defined at this time since much or all land within these boundaries has since been annexed by neighboringmore powerful localities such as Monroe and Uniontownships
