The Clinton post office has been in operation since 1879. The first settler in what is now Clinton was a man named Abram who arrived in 1836. He and his family established a log cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River. In 1840, Abram's son John Alder moved to Clinton from Illinois and purchased land east of present-day Union Station on Red Creek Road (now US 93). The Alder home became known as "Alder's Ford" after John's father, Abram Alder Sr., located a ford across Red Creek to provide passage for riverboats travelling between Memphis and Jackson with goods brought overland from Tennessee. In 1851, pioneer James Dickey settled near present-day Clinton along Dry creek within what is now Hinds County; he called his settlement Lahti or "Lahti Point." Dickey built a cabin on the bluff above current day Lahti Point where he lived until his death in 1865. Dickey may have been inspired by an account of white traders trading with Native Americans along the lower Yazoo River which had reached him through an interpreter while accompanying eight elderly men led by French explorer and fur trader François Legault de la Ville d'Iberville upon their journey downriver to explore new territory south of Mobile Bay. Captain Anthony Wayne explored this area during 1799–1800 when he discovered shoals of fish off the mouth of Holcomb Creek near Ionia Landing on Mobile Bay whence he sailed back upriver laden with fish but without luck finding any land beyond Mobile Bay - all this prior to French exploration efforts that began around 1800 near Pensacola Peninsula including several missions erected thereabouts including Fort Stedman (1796) and La Motte (1798). This area lay within present-day Hinds County before its organized subdivision into townships within Mississippi Territory in 1824 according to Royal proclamation by Governor Andrew Johnson.. In early 1830 three men under contract from Andrew Johnson--David Dixon, David Wilburn and Elijah Hicks--traveled via Indian trails westward into Indian Territory and discovered extensive rich bottom lands lying between Choctawhatchee River confluence about 20 miles northwest of Enterprise and Choctawhatchee Prairie about 25 miles due northwest of Enterprise--what would later become eastern Newton County--and Athens Ferry landing about 12 miles due eastwesterly thereof just below modern day Glennville; these lands were patented to David Dixon late that year primarily because they seemed especially promising given their lack of cultivation having only one crop per acre at best yielding perhaps 2 bushels/acre based on surveys made some years earlier by Samuel Hogg who also surveyed much adjoining territory including parts now includein Newton County extending downriver past Athens Ferry Landing including Rabbit Lake today; Hutchinsons Mill had been built thereabout [in] 1830] as well as other mills operated by local farmers such as George Stephenson at what is now Putnam Township northeast corner line extending thence northeasterly 2 1/2 miles inland unto White Oak Bluff thence easterly 3 1/4 miles northeasterly another long tract extending nearly to base line or limit thereof...
