Clinton is a small town located in Jackson, Mississippi. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and home to many cultural attractions, such as the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum. The town was founded in 1824 by William Sanders and his wife, Lucy.[1] Clinton has been called "the original black settlement in Jackson" because it sprang up almost immediately after the arrival of slaves from Africa in 1818. The first white settlers arrived in 1827. By 1830, there were around 100 people living in Clinton. In 1836, local resident John Fenton purchased land adjacent to present-day Clinton for $10 per acre[2]. The community quickly grew due to its strategic location on the main road between Jackson and Memphis. When Andrew Johnson became president in 1865, he ordered all freedmen traced back their antebellum lineage so that they could receive Reconstruction benefits.[3] The town's growth continued when Johnson appointed Elijah Parish as Pontotoc County's first justice of the peace (JP) in 1870. This event led to a dramatic increase in trade and commerce throughout the area because traders could now reach buyers all across Mississippi without having to pass through Nashville or Atlanta.[4] With over 1,000 residents by 1880,[5], Clinton began developing into an important center for African American commerce and culture. A new school was built that year and soon became known as one of the most influential educational institutions for blacks within Jackson County[6]: In 1889-90 more than $300 worth of groceries were sold at one store alone by African Americans who operated out of this building; In 1901 we had two churches: Our Lady Of Lourdes Church (founded 1890), which seated 350 people; Stiles Methodist Episcopal Church (dedicated 1896), seating 400 people; and Our Savior Baptist Church (1904), seating 250 people...This last church served until 1923 when it burned down due to a storm,[7]: p 8

Cotton planting began here in the early 19th century; sawmills arrived in 1915 and have continued operating ever since. In 1969, Clinton became one of three townships within Hancock County when it was created from parts of Perryville and Tupelo Township. Clinton has been home to a high school since 1925; its current building opened in 1984. The rural community had a population of 788 people according to 2000 Census estimates but reached 1,521 residents at the 2010 census due to various attractions such as an amusement park nearby and its location within commuting distance for many businesses including hospitals and schools in larger cities such as Jackson or Hattiesburg
The first black person to hold office in Mississippi was James Fenton, who served as the state's attorney general from 1892 to 1895. The first African American to be elected as a Democrat in Mississippi was Andrew Young, who served as the 44th president of the United States from 1985 to 1989.
