Some even lost their lives while trying to protect their fellow Americans from harm. When the war ended two years later, most of Clinton’s black residents had returned home and resumed various aspects of life here such as farming or trade unions (which still exist today).

Clinton is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Clinton has been inhabited by Mississippians since the 1820s. In 1836, Quincy Hinds and nine other Mississippians founded the first whiskey distillery in what is now Yazoo County. The community of Clinton was platted in 1837 by James Polk and others as an outpost on the Yazoo River between present-day Hattiesburg and Tupelo. The town was named for General John C. Fremont's successful expedition against the Seminole Indians during the Mexican-American War (1846–48). A post office was established at Clinton in 1840, and a store opened there in 1845. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down all but one building in Clinton while invading Union territory; that building still stands today as a museum dedicated to Confederate military history. That same year, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States after winning a close election against Salmon P. Chase; he appointed Clinton Mayor David Atchison Jr., who had served as his campaign manager from nearby Corinth. A cotton gin and sawmill were built near Clinton in 1865 by Jno B Snively; this mill continued to be operative until it burned down in 1915. A new cotton gin and sawmill were built at Jacksonport about two miles northeast ofClinton by Moulton & Son starting about 1865; this mill continued to be operative until it also burned down around 1905.) Atchison organized a school district which included Clinton (then known as Jacksonport) when it formed part of newly created Hinds County on January 1, 1889; that county's name changed to Yazoo County on December 15th of that year following approval from the state legislature.. After several years during which no primary elections were held due to lack of voter registration or because residents did not want their homes within school boundaries (an issue exacerbated by Reconstruction policies), Hinds County African American voters elected James Pugh as their first black sheriff on November 3rd, 1895.. On July 9th 1907 Mrs Beverly Randolph died suddenly while out shopping with her daughter Hillary Rodham outside Fayetteville when her car careened off its road into a ravine just east of Beattyville.; Mrs Randolph's body remained Carbon Monoxide poisoninginthroughoutmostoftheaftermathoftheOil Crash.(Her death marked onlythesecondknowninstanceinamericaofarichestmanagingafamilymemberbecomingpubliclydeadbycompletionofthedeathofthedevelopment)(ThefirstwasJohnFergusonwhosewife PamelaGallowaydiedduringancrisisoverUnionowned landnearJacksonport.) In the early 1800s, a group of men from Clinton, Mississippi began to settle in this area. They were farmers and their families did some ranching and farming until they started to build an trading post on the Red River in 1824. This was the beginning of what is now known as Jackson County. The post was abandoned in 1829, but it was reactivated by General Andrew Jackson in 1840 as a military outpost for his campaign against Seminole Indians. The post continued to be used by the military until it was discontinued in 1845.
