Clinton is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi about 18 miles (29 km) south of Jackson and about 26 miles (41 km) north of Memphis. Clinton was founded in 1855 by John S. Clinton and James I. Hurt as a post office named for General Andrew Johnson, who had been elected President two years earlier. In the early 19th century, cotton plantations were established in what is now Hinds County by planters from Mobile and other parts of Alabama and Georgia. By 1860, almost all the cotton production in Mississippi had been done within Hinds County; only a small area around Tuscaloosa remained under cultivation. In 1871, General Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and ordered that all cotton plantations be dismantled except those that could provide new jobs for local labor force to help meet quotas set by Congress for each state’s share of farm production. As part of this order, many old cotton plantations were sold or leased to individual farmers or investors who began to build new cotton farms using slave labor instead of Native American or African workers whom they had imported into America onerous contracts with no possibility of escape should their terms not be met. John S., James I., and their families moved from their original home near Tupelo to Clinton during this time period because it offered more fertile land than any other development in central Mississippi. The Cincinnatians quickly began building up a large frame house which still stands today – it is called “The White House” after President Ulysses S Grant’s wife died there while he was serving as Vice President under Sherman during Reconstruction following the Civil War). They also started an agricultural business which continue until present day:Clinton Manna Marketing Co.; Incorporated date unknown This company has produced high-quality cornmeal products since 1865 when they first opened their doors at 901 Main Street located across from Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). Since then they have expanded operations over 25 acres with an additional 6 manufacturing buildings including 3 feed mills; 3 cheese factories; 5 hoggeries; 1 flour mill; 1 dairy farm; 4 poultry plants; 2 boatyards/machinery sheds/garages etc….Today Plains Feed is one hundred percent contractor operated making feed for some 20 cows/day plus hay & Cloverowder….. much like when father built his factory back in those days!
