Cleveland was founded in 1851 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a small trading post on the Yazoo River. It became a courthouse and seat of government in 1875. Cleveland was incorporated as a city in 1902. It lost its status as a city after it joined the US federal government as an unincorporated community within Harrison County. In 1960 it reabsorbed into Hinds County and has since experienced steady growth with population reaching over 10,000 by 1990. Cleveland is located on State Highway 82 about 20 miles (32 km) west of Jackson and 120 miles (193 km) north of Memphis. The history of Cleveland begins with Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1851 from Ireland to provide labor for local plantations during the antebellum period. When these settlers moved westward along the Ohio River they found that land had become available for settlement near what is now Cleveland’s downtown area which they named “Cleveland” after their new home country – Ireland being one of the most recently explored regions on American soil at this time (Beacham). The earliest record of activity at “Cleveland” can be found from November 1st, 1851 when James Kippenberger purchased 640 acres (248 ha) east of present day downtown Cleveland from Joshua Hinton for $5 per acre ($26 per hectare). This purchase marked the beginning of what would be an almost constant influx of Irish immigrants to this area until finally all vestiges thereof were eliminated by 1900 when passenger rail service arrived and transportation became more affordable making Brownsville far more accessible than Cleveland itself (Galloway 2003). shortly thereafter another groupof Irishmen set out to build homes on land adjacent to where present day Union Station currently stands and name their new settlement “Whitewater” after nearby Whitewater Creek which they thought would provide them with better access to water supplies necessary for agriculture while also providing shade against hot sun during summer months ilearning equal if not greater incomes than those enjoyed by those living east of I-30 or I-10 . By 1860 there were already several hundred residents living in Whitewater and many others began settling around what are today King Street NW & Euclid Avenue NW., including parts of East Jordan/Harrisonburg Township which lay just outside current day Brownsville boundaries ilearning an average wage between $2-$4 per hour worked without any overtime privileges ilearning tax breaks unavailable to those residing within Harrisonburg Township limits only . Eventually most residents decided that living within their own township boundaries was best for them having little interest or need outside respective communities(Fowler 2002). While some sterling early memories remain such as cowboy days spent hunting game along Buffalo Bayou just south of town Limits; however these days have largely been replaced by commercial activity centered around King Street NW & Euclid AveNW., something that has sadly not changed much since World War II when numerous factories closed up shop adjoining King Street & Euclid while Rubber City took over much area directly across King Street fromtoday’s Brownsvilleshirtless kids playing catch right out front on newly built playground equipment factory workers coming home late night abusing drugs etc…..In short; while various aspects may still affect daily life experiences some longtime residents today view things differently than did their predecessors years ago….Today we enjoy excellent quality medical care options close by including Baptist Health System,,TriPoint hospital,, Methodist Hospital,, Baylor University Hospitals& Clinics,, Vanderbilt University Medical Center,,,,the QuikTrip store next door,. We also boast world class sports programs throughout our school system including football, basketball, baseball and soccer ilearning high degrees from top universities like Southern Illinois University Carbondale,,,,University Of Tennessee,,,,University Of Missouri,,,,Mississippi Valley State Univ.........While our economy has traditionally been characterized by manufacturing jobs primarily associated with rubber products such as tires, plastics and auto parts production; nevertheless recent years have seen significant investment come our way such as real estate development totaling nearly $1 billion dollars resulting in many new businesses opening up throughout Northeast Mississippi ......Despite all this progressiveness we continue to experience occasional negative trends such as drive thru robberies taking place right off KingStreetNE., vehicle thefts , fast food restaurants parking lots becoming dumping grounds for abandoned cars etc....... Although these incidents are certainly regrettable they cannot be totally ignored given how important economic development actually is both locally AND nationally .............................................................. Today's citizens OF CLEVELAND MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY ARE WELL OCCUPIED WITH STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER AMERICA EACH YEAR MAKING OUR COMMUNITIES A MORE INTERESTING LIFESTYLE FOR EVERYONE IN THE AREA .........
