The first gunfight in Cleveland, Mississippi took place on December 10, 1875. A group of black men, led by William H. Crawford, attacked a white man named John Coker while he was walking his dog. The men shot at Coker until he ran into a house and hid behind the door. The men then turned their attention to Crawford and began shooting at him. When Crawford didn’t die immediately, the men decided to let him go. They then went back to attacking Coker.
Cleveland, Mississippi is a city in the US state of Mississippi and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 922 at the 2010 census. Cleveland is home to several universities including Jackson State University and Delta State College as well as professional sports teams such as the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) and the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA. The first settlers in what is now Cleveland were French Canadians who arrived in 1797. The area that is now Cleveland was part of Attala County until it was ceded to Marshall County by Congress on March 14, 1815. It became a part of Mississippi on November 3, 1836. Prior to its incorporation into Cleveland, it was known as "Ville de la Prairie" or "town of Prairie." The name change may be due to its location near what are today termed "the prairies" which once comprised much of present-day Stark County and included parts of modern Detroit and Flint. In 1868, when newly formed Stark County was formed from portions of other counties in Mississippi, Ville de la Prairie became part of that new county. In 1898, when Ohio Avenue opened up through downtown Cleveland for automotive traffic after being built across the river from where it currently stands (then called Spring Street), many people began calling downtown "Cleveland" because that's where most vehicular traffic crossed over from then on. Downtown development continued steadily throughout the 1920s and 1930s with additions such as Euclid Avenue (now University Circle) becoming an important shopping district; however during World War II business declined significantly due to shortages caused by rationing; nevertheless, some stores reopened after war ended but did so at a lower level since prices had increased again post-war Reconstruction levels. However, during this time period there also developed significant black cultural activity within downtown areas; this trend accelerated following World War II when black Americans started returning home having served in military campaigns overseas while white Mississippians returned home for holidays or stayed away altogether (thus creating both racially segregated neighborhoods outside metropolitan areas while still inside those areas). In 1950–1951 Mayor Coleman Wray constructed Severin Place between Erie Boulevard and Euclid Avenue—later renamed Ashton Drive—as one major componentof his effortsto promote economic development within inner-city neighborhood adjacent to Municipal Hospital District No. 2 (HHD2). This area would become known commonly for its high poverty rates among African Americans prior to gentrification beginning in earnest later that decade along with decreased crime rates overall thanks largely to municipal investment directed at HHD2 programs like no-knock raids targeting criminal gangs rather than individual residents or businesses . From 1965 onward until 2009 Indians 425th Infantry Regiment Armory located off Lorain Road near I-75 made Plainfield their permanent garrison/officer quarters/post office complex primarily serving Black American soldiers stationed/residential personnel associated there with unit tours deployed abroad often visitedCLEVELAND alongside units from surrounding departments during deployments not only providing infrastructure support but also hosting numerous community events open TO THE PUBLIC including various parade performances Christmas concerts etc... operationsite remained operational daily thru 2009 despite tornado damage which destroyed buildings south & west side annexe housed therein barracks main building gymnasium chapel school auditorium theater multifamily housing projects separate entrances facing east onto Lorain Rd thence into town

Cleveland, Mississippi is a small town located in Stark County, Mississippi. The population was 928 at the 2010 census. Cleveland is the county seat of Stark County. The post office was founded in 1881 and named for ClevelANDeveland, Ohio. Cleveland is located on the Tallapoosa River about 20 miles southwest of Jackson, Mississippi. The first white settlers in what is now Cleveland were James and Jane Wellman who arrived in 1827 from Maryland. They built a cabin on the banks of the river and named their settlement after ClevelANDeveland, Ohio which they had seen while traveling through that state on their way to Texas. In 1830, John Wellman & family came and settled here also. He raised cotton until 1845 when he migrated to Mobile where he died in 1865. His wife Sarah (Liddle) Wellman continued to live here until her death in 1895. One of John & Sarah's daughters married WiLLiam Hogg who became an early settler here also before moving to Meridianville, Alabama in 1901 where he served as mayor from 1907-1909 and 1912-14 During World War I, Cleveland volunteer squadrons furnished food for soldiers quartered there including one wing which flew over Detroit airport carrying provisions for troops stationed there; this squadron was composed entirely of local boys with no military experience whatsoever! Cleveland's military service began during Reconstruction following reconstruction efforts by President Abraham Lincoln following his March 4th Emancipation Proclamation In 1893 Nancie A Ashe bought 640 acres adjacent to what is now downtown Cleveland from MrJohn Sowden for $7500 dollars which included all current site within limits then known as "Walking Street". This purchase set off a period of growth which followed with additions to the core area including: First Baptist Church (1895), Court House Annex (1900), Masonic Temple/First National Bank building (1901), Post Office Building (1903), Federal courthouse annex (1905), Drury School Annex/Plymouth Savings Bank building ( 1909). On November 7th 1905 Drury School Annex/Plymouth Savings Bank building burned down leaving only ruins remaining today
