On November 4, 1896, the Cleveland National Guard was called to protect a small town in Mississippi from an armed robbery. The Guard arrived on horseback andmounted pistols as they made their way through the town. The robbers were caught and executed. In 1851-52, when American forces invaded Minnesota to quash Indian uprisings against Ulysses S Grant’s government, General Andrew Johnson ordered General John Cordon to move his army from Memphis southward across Lake Pontchartrain and into Mississippi where he found an open market for new land east of Mobile Bayou (now Opelousas). The site chosen for Cleveland was two miles due east of present-day downtown Jackson on what is now Superior Avenue. The first settler in Cleveland was Peter Hall who arrived in 1836 after helping clear land near what is now Point Pleasant Beach along Mobile Bayou for Colonel James Wirtz’s cotton plantation. Hall and his family were forced to flee when President Andrew Johnson’s Army burned their home during the all-out effort against Native Americans at Fort Sumter in April 1861…..In 1865 while Union troops were besieging Vicksburg they discovered that Confederate Major General Pemberton had moved his command from Chattanooga downriver past Corinth into northwestern Mississippi near where Brownsville stands today……In 1870–71 Clevelander built a sawmill on Muskegon Creek just upstream from Point Pleasant Beach…………..After closure of Muskegon Falls Bridge in 1945 Brown Street between Muskegon Creek and Superior Avenue became known as “Cleveland Boulevard”……..As early as 1907 public works employees were using a large dock located at bayou point known locally as “the wharf” because it would provide access onto or leave shoreboats or canoes moored at various points along the river……….The wharf continued being used until 1947 when it was replaced by an auto dealership garage…..Today Cleveland has a few modest stores including two corner gas stations operated by Gulf Coast Gas Corporation and American Motors Corporation……………Cleveland Municipal Airport covers most of downtown with single asphalt runways serving three classes: IFR/PPR – 12/2630-1; LUF – 12/2300-6; local short takeoffs & landings only…………….CLEVELAND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT CLEVELAND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT CLEVELAND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT – WITH 3 APPROACHES AND A RATE OF $20 A HOUR FOR ALL AREAS THE CLEVELAND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT IS ONE OF THE BEST IN MISSISSIPPI
