CLEVELAND, Mississippi, is a small town located in the eastern part of Jackson County. It was founded in 1836 by James M. Cleveland and his wife, Nancy (née Rucker). In 1907, a new courthouse was built in downtown Cleveland by contractor John Sibley Beall; it served as the county seat until 1931 when it was moved to Starkville. During World War II, Cleveland played an important role as both a military training ground and supply depot for troops fighting in Europe; its citizens supported Ulysses S. Grant throughout his presidency. After World War II ended, much of downtown Cleveland suffered from decay and neglect; however, redevelopment efforts began in the late 1980s and early 1990s resulting in some new cultural attractions such as Art Deco architecture and a $25 million dollar renovation of downtown's theatres which reopened in 2003.] Today, CLEVELAND remains an important community with strong ties to its history; it has been renamed "Delta Sigma Phi" following their merger with Alpha Sigma Pi fraternity two years ago at Clemson University.]
