Clarksdale, Mississippi is a small town located in the Jackson County area of Mississippi. The community was originally founded by Methodists in 1836. The first business in Clarksdale was a grocery store owned and operated by Rev. J.C.Ritchie. In 1847, Clarksdale's first school was built on the present site of the Community Church, and it served as the primary educational institution for residents of the town until 1964 when Claxton-Haley Elementary School replaced it. In 1935, debate between Presbyterians and Baptists over ecclesiastical boundaries led to violence that resulted in 19 Baptist members being killed and more than 300 Protestant church members being injured or captured during what is known as the "Clarksdale Massacre." This event is generally regarded as one of the most violent clashes between religious groups in American history. The economic development of Clarksdale began with its incorporation into Jackson County in 1881. After becoming an incorporated municipality, Clarksdale experienced rapid growth during its early years as a commercial center due to its location near various transportation hubs including Mobile Bayou and Memphis Railroad Station. During this time period, Clarksdale became known for its producible goods such as cotton, coal, and oil production which made it a major generating power center for local businesses throughout Jackson County. By 1930, however, Clarksdalers were experiencing growing concerns about their economy because of increased competition from larger towns within Jackson County and elsewhere within southern Tennessee Valley regionologies due to new industrial developments such as Tupelo (Mississippi) Steel Company (1925). These pressures caused some people in Clarkstowne to begin calling for secession from Jackson County; however this demand never gained significant traction among residents until after World War II when things changed dramatically following Pearl Harbor . With increasing military engagement throughout Southeast Asia , many citizens became interested in preserving Jefferson Davis' legacy rather than succumbing to external forces that could potentially strip them of their cultural heritage . As part of efforts to promote regional identity within postwar America , severalJackson county officials established historical markers at various points along with other initiatives promoting regionalism such as postage stamps which featured images highlighting unique aspects of each county's culture . Additionally, Clarenville Library began publishing an annual journal called "The Delta" that highlighted interesting events or people associated with each countywide village or township .
