Clarksdale's history began with its founding as a small town in 1892 by veteran military officer and entrepreneur James Fenton and his wife, Martha Easley Fenton. The name "Clarksdale" was derived from the nearby Hernando County seat of Bayou Teche, which had been named for General Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law, Colonel John A. Quitman. In 1901, Clarksdale became an incorporated municipality under the laws of Mississippi and soon afterwards became known for its agricultural production and blacksmithing industries which long supplied much of Jackson's local industry. In 1966, when Mississippi adopted a new Constitution providing for slavery to be abolished throughout the state effective January 1, 1967, Clarksdale followed suit and ceased to be an incorporated municipality; it now forms part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The region around Clarksdale has seen some significant changes over time – most notably during reconstruction following World War II when many African Americans were brought into white households as farm laborers or war workers in order to help rebuild post-war society following heavy losses suffered by their own community due to Ku Klux Klan violence and other race riots across America. This influx also led to increased racial tensions within our community that continue today despite efforts by some residents to address these issues through education and self-help programs
