Clarksdale is located on the banks of the Yazoo River and is home to several thousand residents who work in nearby cities. It is also a center for education and industry. The early history of Clarksdale can be traced back to 1814 when General Andrew Jackson's forces besieged Fort Sumter in Mobile Bay. The fort had been built by British settlers and was used as a base of operations for their Indian allies during the American Civil War. After the war, many of these British settlers moved to what is now Clarksdale and began developing land around the river mouth. In 1881, General J.D.[1] Hardin purchased some land from local merchants near the river mouth and named it "Clarksdale." He designed this community according to his vision of an open-air cotton gin that would combine features found in other places such as Memphis and Birmingham while still allowing farmers access to their crops during good years. The first phase of development saw construction of several homes and stores along with surrounding sheds and outbuildings used for storage or office space until 1901 when a large schoolhouse was completed across from Highway 97B (now US 90). The school building served as both a depot for goods brought into Clarksdale by railroads through central Alabama before being delivered here on flatcars41gathered together at points along Railroad Avenue2and stored overnight at various locations until being finally unloaded by boat onto Highway 97B just north of downtown in 18984; only two decades after its construction! By 1925, however, plans were underway to build a new high school which would serve as both an administrative center for all aspects of community life5and also provide students with opportunities for academic excellence6thus providing one key impetus behind growth throughout much of that decade7: fire prevention! One result was an increased demand on public schools8; another led to increased investment in infrastructure9maintenance10and educational programming11such as summer day camps12for young people looking for ways to gain experience working within society rather than just living off family resources
