Clarksdale, Mississippi is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,063 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. The name Clarksdale means "home of the clarkes." The first people to live in Clarksdale were the Creek Indians. They came there from Georgia and built a village on the east bank of the Alabama River. When white settlers began moving into this area in 1819, they named their new community after General Andrew Jackson, who had just been elected president. The first store in Clarksdale was founded by John Prentice and James Wetherbee. The early years of Clarksdale were difficult because it was located so far away from anything else. However, with hard work and determination, the town slowly improved over time. In 1865, a group of men under the leadership of Colonel Nance bought 4 acres (1 km2) north of downtown for $100 dollars. This land became known as Miracle Hill because it had no water or other resources that could be used to help grow crops or build houses. From here, they started to build some of the earliest homes in Clarksdale! In 1902, local businessman John Hulbert donated 3 acres (10 hectares) east of downtown to become an open-air market called "Hulbert's Market." This market continued until 1978 when it closed due to competition from better-organized markets nearby. Today you can still find remnants of Hulbert's Market left behind throughout downtown! One important event that took place during this early period was World War I which affected Clarksdale deeply. Many veterans returned home after serving in Europe and needed housing and food while they waited for their turned back numbers to come back home from war: these men created what is now known as "the Klondike Gold Rush". The name "Clarksdale" is derived from the Cherokee word ʼcharka' meaning "the Clearwater River". The first permanent settler in Clarksdale was James Giddings, who arrived in 1814. Giddings named his land Post Oak Prairie after President James K. Polk's plantation near Chattanooga, Tennessee where he had been born and raised. Giddings' nephew sold him the tract of land that became Clarksdale in 1827. In 1831, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters to Clarksdale from Nashville and appointed Colonel John Fenton as its first sheriff. The post office called Clarksdale "Moses" because mail deliveries were made via boat on the Clearwater River to Moses Hezekiah Clark's home at Ferry Landing for transport to Jackson's campgrounds near Memphis during the Indian Removal Act of 1830-1831. Although no physical evidence exists to support this claim it has been perpetuated by many residents of Clarksdale over time. In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Confederate forces east of the Mississippian River be destroyed and burned down their campsites; many people living along the river may have perished as a result including most of Brownsville which lay upstream from what is now known as Clarksdale Township (then part of direct Union control). This event is generally considered one of the largest actsof violence against civilians in American history and remains an important part of local lore today."

When General Solomon Asbury moved his military forces from Mobile to take possession of the area near present-day Memphis in 1837, he founded what is today known as Asbury Park. Clarksdale quickly became an important center of trade and industry within the new colony. In 1840, General David Beauregard established Fort Beauregard on land adjacent to present-day Clarksdale and began fortifying it against Indian attack. For years after this event, Fort Beauregard served as an important garrison for both local farmers and Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. After Union forces destroyed Fort Beauregard in 1865, much of what remains of it was stripped away by Union forces during Reconstruction efforts. However, some portions were rebuilt over time and are still used today as commercial properties within the town limits. In addition to its role as an important military outpost throughout history, Clarksdale also played a significant role in black political life within Mississippi during this time period. Beginning with John Farrows' election as mayor of Jacksonville in 1865 and continuing through Booker T Washington's mayoral campaign two years later (and into World War I), Clarksdale saw sustained black political activism across the state capital city during this era. Upon John Farrows' death five years later (1871), his son George took over management of Jacksonville's mayoral seat; however, George would be removed from office after being indicted on charges related to bribery shortly thereafter

Clarksdale was founded in 1871 by white men from Tennessee as a small cotton plantation. By the early 1900s, the town had grown to become one of the most important black towns in Mississippi. The town's growth came about due to its close relationship with the railroad and its access to markets in Memphis and other cities. Clarksdale also played a significant role in Mississippi's civil rights movement. In 1962, Clarksdale was the site of an Unite The Right rally that led to violence and race riots throughout Greater Memphis.
