Clarksdale, Mississippi is a small town in the southern United States. The population was 8,878 at the 2000 census and it is the county seat of Claiborne County. It is located on the Yazoo River. The town was named for Colonel George Mclntyre Clarks (1786-1863), an American general who served in the Mexican-American War and in office as secretary of war under Ulysses S. Grant. The first settler in what would become Clarksdale was John Auld, who arrived in 1820 from Scotland. He established a ferry service across the Yazoo River to connect his farm with those of other settlers near present-day Vicksburg. By 1830, Clarksdale had a school and a store. In 1839, Judge James Doolittle purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along the river for $4 per acre ($40 per km2). This land would form part of Claiborne County today. Doolittle donated this land to build what would become one of Mississippi's first schools – Concordia Female Seminary – which opened its doors on Valentine's Day, February 1, 1840. The community grew rapidly due to its location along the river and access to good farmland nearby; by 1850, Clarksdale had 10 churches, 5 stores, 2 taverns and 100 citizens (). In 1861, during Confederate efforts to drive Union forces out of Mississippi, General Robert E Lee ordered his army into Claiborne County to supportederate causes there; when Union troops discovered this operation they drove back all Confederate forces without any fighting In 1865 following Reconstruction efforts by President Abraham Lincoln led by General Ulysses S Grant%, Clarksdale became part of new Mississippi Territory created following that state's recovery from Reconstruction Era slavery & Jim Crow segregation laws
