Canton is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded on April 6, 1885 by John W. Canton and others as a result of the consolidation of several small towns in Marshall County. The name "Canton" comes from the Choctaw word can'ta (halt) meaning to cross over or go through (a stream or river). In 1898 the people of Canton raised money to build a school which they namedafter their hometown in Germany - Halle-Mittecke. On December 12, 1898, Canton's first post office opened with nine residents mailing ballots for General Election 98A. In 1902, Many families moved out of Canton because of cottonseed prices that were too high and new plantations were being established in the area so cotton could be grown again cheaply. However, some who remained decided to start an agricultural society and called themselves the Cotton Growers' Society until 1909 when it changed its name to The Cotton Merchants' Association Incorporated because it became general merchandise stores instead of just plantation crops storagehouses as originally planned. In 1907–1910 Chinese immigrants began arriving in large numbers in Mississippi during World War I due to plentiful job opportunities available on munitions plants near Mobile and Memphis; many found work as sharecroppers on large cotton plantations then abandoned by owners after the war ended; however many continued working long hours for very little pay even after they left those plantations while others started businesses such as restaurants and grocery stores around Canton before returning home during later decades. By 1930 only 7% of median household income came from agriculture while 90% came from services such as education, transportation, insurance and other commercial activities; about 60% of all households had one member employed outside agriculture but most farmersoperated more than one farmstead including 10–15 slaves who worked off cane fields during harvest time earning between $1/day (1980 US dollars) up to $5/day plus board and lodging while also picking cotton for their masters; Slavery didn't end until 1865 when all U S states abolished it except for Missouri where it continues into present day under various aliases including "indefinite servitude." Slaveholders received no land nor any benefits enjoyed by homeowners such as schools or churches which were built without federal funding despite pleas from slaveowners throughout Reconstruction period urging Congress not to give away free land like antebellum planters had done but rather fund public works projects needed for citizens recovering from reconstruction era violence & economic depression caused by northern embargoed exports & banks collapse

Canton began as a frontier settlement in 1836 byacco Indians and white pioneers. A post office was established here in 1840, and the community became known as Canton after its location on the "Canton River". In 1853, Canton was designated as the seat of Harrison County by Act of Congress. The county courthouse was built in 1854 and still stands today. The cotton industry soon became one of Canton's most important industries, thanks to its fertile soil and lack of competing local resources. By 1902, however, the cotton industry had declined and the town faced financial difficulties. In response to this situation, Canton voters approved a referendum authorizing city government with limited powers to provide services such as police protection and firefighting while protecting citizens' rights to assembly, speech or business transactions without prior notice or consent from their neighbors. This ordinance helped give rise to what is now called "The City Charter." Soon after becoming a city within canton limits, Canton began developing many new civic amenities including an indoor pool (opened in 1935), recreation hall (opening in 1944), library (established in 1951), social service agencies ( founded 1961), public works department (established 1966) and more than 50 businesses that are still open today including several banks and restaurants (%1). In 1980s during economic recession local residents turned against their city government through protests that saw some destruction of property; however these protests did not lead to any changes within canton limits governance
