In 1953, the Canton School Board voted to purchase a six-gun rifles and shotguns range in order to improve school shooting skills. The rifle range was completed in 1954 and became known as the "Canton Rifle Range." The rifle range played an important role in developing Canton's military heritage. From its inception, the rifle range helped training local law enforcement officers and other first responders. In 1984, the rifle range was donated to the Canton-Lafayette Community Schools District by Military Officer Jerry Gentry. Today, the rifle range remains an important part of education in Canton. One of the several schools that were founded within the community include: (1)Aiken School District No 3; (2) Highland School District No 2; (3) Stanton High School District No 7; (4) Jacksonville Baptist Christian School - now known as Samaritan Bible Academy; (5) Methodist Episcopal Church - now known as First Presbyterian Church - Canton-Jacksonville Branch; (6) European Baptist Missionary Society Chapel - later called English Baptist Mission House; (7) Masonic Temple No 2 - also known as Masonic Hall & Lodge #2 ; finally (8) Hoover Elementary/Secondary School which served children from pre-K through 8th grade until 1998 when it merged into Canton Central Middle school which serves all students grades 9-12). When Jackson vowing not to seat any slaveholders during Reconstruction filed its case against Alabama for violating their rights under the Thirteenth Amendment on November 4, 1870,[1] justices William Hallett and David Hill sent letters to each Southern state offering land north of Mobile Bay for resettlement if they would become free states according to Article IV of the Constitution.[citation needed] On January 6, 1871[2], Stark County became free under US Supreme Court decision Plessy v Ferguson et al., ending slavery within one year in Mississippi[3][4]). Afterward new laws prohibited mulatto residents from voter registration or holding office within white municipalities other than those directly descended from Freeborn men who had served honorably during Union service such as rifle company officers or Ku Klux Klan members[5]. This ban lasted until 1965 when it was repealed due to court cases upholding black voting rights beginning with Harrison v Board of Education.[6][7][8] On December 10th 1910 racist violence erupted throughout parts of Stark County after two white women were insulted at a carnival fairgrounds near Carthage while black people were being taken away for transportation back home across Tunica River Bridge onto plantations where they worked primarily picking cotton
