Canton is a town in Lamar County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first people to live in Canton were the Hennig family from Tennessee and their families who arrived in 1843. They built a cabin on the edge of what is now Canton Cemetery. The Hennigs were followed by other settlers such as Barnes, Beasley, Rankin and others over the next few years. In 1851, John Rankin founded an academy for black students in Canton which became known as "Rankin College". In 1865, Confederate General Kirby Smith advanced his army through Lamar County towards Corinth and Nashua before turning north towards Tupelo to join forces with General Robert Ewing's Army of Northern Mississippi at Milliken's Bend near present day Starkville. On November 8th 1865 while retreating through Pickens County he ordered his cavalryman James Meeks to ride into battle against a small force of white men militia under Captain Lewis Settle just outside of Canton limits and kill all those women and children who had accompanied him including Mrs. Rankin who was living with her father-in-law on Market Street at that time; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of racial violence in Canton which would continue until after World War II
