Canton was founded by white settlers in 1819 as a small settlement on the banks of the Pearl River. The first post office was established in 1824. The first store and hotel were built in 1827 and 1830, respectively. In 1840, Canton had 2 newspapers and 10 teachers. By 1865, it had 1 newspaper and 11 teachers. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Canton served as an Union garrison until it surrendered on April 12, 1865. In 1928, canton became part of Jackson County when it was created from parts of Stark and Lauderdale counties. The first courthouse was built in 1938 and served as the county seat until 1970 when it was replaced by the present courthouse building which is located on Main Street between US Routes 20 and 22

The first white people to live in what became Canton were Quakers who arrived during the 17th century. They built mills and gristmills around 1760-1770, and by 1800 had established themselves as a small town with about 200 residents. In 1810 they incorporated as a village, and by 1825 they had grown to 1,500 citizens. In 1836 Canton voted to secede from Mississippi because it objected to racial discrimination against black Mississippians; this vote helped precipitate the American Civil War (1861-1865). The Union Army destroyed most of Canton's buildings but managed to capture three men—including its mayor—and two cannons before withdrawing without capturing any military targets or civilians. The town quickly recovered and served as an important supply stop for Confederate forces moving into northern Mississippi during the war. Aftermath: After being burned down by Union troops during their withdrawal from north Mississippi, Canton slowly rebuilt until becoming an important center for cotton production in post-war America. Its heyday came after World War II when it experienced rapid growth due to new opportunities brought about by industrialization in south Mississippi
