When Canton was founded by General James Knoppers on July 7, 1830 – less than two weeks after Jackson's inauguration – it quickly became one of the most important cotton plantations in Mississippi due to its location on the Mississippian River between Mobile and Montgomery Counties (later Baldwin County) upstream from dams built by Revolutionary War general William Gadsden for irrigation purposes. In 1840, Knoppers sold his interest in Canton Plantation to Wm Hogg for $10 million dollars ($ when measured against current prices). One reason why this purchase generated so much excitement at the time may have been because Hogg had earlier acquired a large tract of land adjoining present-day Pearl Street within minutes of making his purchase; this property would later become known as Gadsden Field (the site of US Army Camp Freedom also known as Fort Gaines).
