These efforts ultimately led to increased peace and order in Canton after years of violent crime and social unrest. Canton was first settled in 1821 by African Americans, and arrived as a slave community. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Mississippi River in 1846, and soon became a center for cotton production. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Canton sided with the Confederacy, and many of its residents were forced to flee. The town was sacked by Union troops in 1865, and most of its inhabitants were killed or enslaved. Over time, however, Canton slowly regained some of its lost population and economic power. In 1994, Canton was designated as a city by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.
Canton, Mississippi is located in the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered by Alabama to the east, Florida to the north, Louisiana to the west, and Texas to the south. The population of Canton was approximately 38,000 at the 2000 census. The town was founded by General Robert E. Lee in 1859 as a small trading post on Catfish Creek. After Confederate forces were defeated at Fort Sumter in April 1861, Canton became a strategic stop on Confederate shipping routes across the Gulf of Mexico. By 1865, Canton had become an important cotton port on the Mississippi River. In 1894, it became part ofserved as capital of Jackson County until 1907 when it moved to Jackson City. After World War II, many African Americans relocated to Canton from rural areas throughout Mississippi because of social and economic opportunities available here. Many businesses and institutions have been established in Canton over time including: The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), which opened its doors in 1948; American Baptist Churches (ABC) with their main church building still standing today; The Masonic Temple which has been home to many different organizations over time such as a library system for central Jackson County; Pepsi-Cola Refreshment Center which opened in 1984; and Old Hickory Brewery which operates today as a local brewery with tours available daily during operation hours. In recent years there has been discussion about whether or not Canton should be removed fromJackson County due to its high crime rate and lack of amenities for residents such as schools or healthcare services. However, despite these challenges, current residents continue to enjoy great life experiences here including easy access to all that Jackson County has to offer from both town center locations within walking distance or biking distance or simply taking public transportation into town proper where most activities take place.

Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Stark County. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Canton were French traders who landed in 1795 on an exploration voyage around Cape Horn and named it La Grande Ile (Great Island). They returned in 1802 and reported that they had discovered "a very rich country, full of all sorts of metals and minerals." The town's name derived from its location on Great Island—the largest natural island in the Mississippi River system. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson founded what would become Stark County as a result of his victory over Shelby County during the American Civil War. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Canton became one of the most racially segregated cities in America. This policy was due to political correctness at a time when African Americans were still considered slaves and could not own property or vote without their owner's approval. However, by 1870 Canton had become one of Mississippi's most active black communities with several small businesses catering to African Americans including grocery stores, restaurants, schools, churches and other social services. Additionally, local banks offered banking services toAfrican Americans for the first time; this helped facilitate economic development for African Americans throughout much of Mississippi during this era. In 1960 Canton was chosen as one of five finalists for inclusion in Jackson into Meridian-Jefferson City-Jackson Combined Statistical Area which included all seven counties in Jackson metropolitan area plus Decatur andjacksonville Florida The selection process consisted of interviews with residents along with observations from observers from other cities within our combined statistical area about how we functioned as a community within that larger region Canton submitted an application which was accepted on July 9th 1960 making it one step closer to becoming an official part of Meridian/Jefferson City/Jackson Combined Statistical Area
Canton was founded in 1821 as a post office on the Yazoo River. It became a town in 1828 and was named for John Canton, an engineer who had helped build the Mississippi Canal. The town had a population of about 150 people when it was renamed for General Andrew Jackson in 1834. In 1845, the United States acquired land east of the Mississippi River from Spain and made it a territory called Florida; as part of this acquisition, Jacksonville, Florida, became the new capital of Florida. The name of the original town was changed to Jacksonville again in 1847 because Congress wanted to avoid confusion with New York City.
