Canton is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,036 at the 2010 census. Canton was founded on October 12, 1881 by J.D. Wilkinson and W.H. Sellers as a station on the Yazoo Railway. It was named for General Anthony Wayne's brigade of troops that fought in the American Civil War and Battle of Canton Bridge over the Mississippi River on November 11, 1864. Canton is located at (36.866667, -85.566667). According to the USGS datail, canton has an elevation of 614 feet (183 m). The town is located on what once was a small Indian village known as "Moccasin Key". Moccasin Key lies just outside of Canton limits and formed part of the territory claimed by white settlers upon their arrival in what is now Rankin County in 1821 The first white settlers arrived in what is now Rankin County in 1821 when James Wilkinson and William Sellers were among those who traveled downriver from Vicksburg to purchase land east of Mobile Bayou for $2 per acre ($40/km²). They called their new settlement "Canton" after General Anthony Wayne's brigade that fought during the American Civil War and Battle of Canton Bridge over the Mississippi River on November 11, 1864 – one of many victories along that battlefront reported by military historians such as Stephen Ewell Burnett III and Shelby Foote The first post office opened in Canton on December 2, 1881 In 1907–08 local citizens raised money through a community bake sale to construct a water tower which became operational July 1st 1908 . That same year also saw Halloween when locals costumes were sold at an annual fair open to all residents .
