Canton is located on the Yazoo River and serves as its main economic center. The town was founded in 1881 by General John Pemberton and his family from Tennessee. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Canton in 1881 during the early days of the American Civil War. They were led by General John Pemberton and his family who came from Tennessee to settle a land grant that had been given to them by Baron Randolph Churchill. At first, there were only a few cotton plantations in what is now Canton but over time they grew into a major agricultural community with more than 100 slaves working on their farms. In 1911, when it became part of Macon County, Canton’s economy diversified thanks to lumbering, mining and other businesses which sprang up around the new county courthouse building which still stands today. The history of Canton goes back even further though little can be found written about it until well into the 20th century when oral histories began surfacing about local events and people from then onwards. Many people who lived here during this time have passed away but their lives remain important reminders of what happened here during particular periods in history- such as Reconstruction era (1870-1877), World War II (1939-1945) and postwar period (1949-1973). One particularly significant event that took place within these years was when African Americans began to gain legal rights through voting for the first time in Mississippi during the late 19th century; this process continued until after passage of laws limiting voting opportunities for black Mississippians starting in 1965 known as “the Thirteenth Amendment” effectively ending all vestiges of public black suffrage across America meaning that all citizens could Only participate through registration or vote via absentee ballots if they resided outside of certain counties or areas specifically designated for voting by race or color exclusively. This act also ushered in decades long Jim Crow segregation practices whereby non-white residents living within predominantly white areas were limited access to education, housing and other basic services enjoyed by whites while African Americans residing further away experienced discriminatory treatment at every turn including direct discrimination against job hunting/employment opportunities as well as air travel bans due to high levels of crime among both races throughout much of southern Mississippi during this time period dubbed “the Great Migration” brought about largely by racist policies enacted nationally spearheaded by President Franklin D Roosevelt following enactment of Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1948 sealing off former slave states like Georgia and Alabama from full membership within American society since those states had voted overwhelmingly against secession conceding their status as Confederate nations rather than joining Union under Ulysses S Grant shortly after Appomattox Court battle ended on April 9th 1865)); however much has changed since then with recent advancements made towards social justice Initiatives like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter ensuring that any form bigotry or discrimination towards one group does not stand unquestioned amongst our society today.;
