Canton, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 12,831 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The name "Canton" comes from the Choctaw word "kanton," meaning "a small village." The first settler in what is now Canton was James Hays who came in 1828 and established a gristmill on the south side of the Bark River. He named his new community after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The town started to take form in the late 1830s when John Sibley began to develop land north of Canton Creek. In 1836 he founded a store and post office at what is now known as Sibley's Store on US Highway 51A near present-day Canton Elementary School. This location became known as "Canton". In 1840 Isaac Hardwick built a log cabin on the east side ofpresent-day Hickory Hill Road northwest of what is now Canton High School; this became known as Hardwick's Cabin. In 1851 Edwin Crouch bought some land from David Dixon and laid out what are today Canton Village and Hardyville neighbourhoods on it; these neighbourhoods were later renamed after their founders: Crouch Village (1851), Dixon Heights (1864), Hardwick Heights (1912), and Hawkins Heights (1941). In 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant arrived in Mississippi during his ill-fated Overland Expedition and set up camp at Meridian Junction where he ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman to cross over into Alabama so that he could march through Chattanooga towards Mobile Bayou with an army under General Joe Johnston waiting behind to attack them should they be successful. When Sherman learned that Grant was also visiting him at Meridian Junction he decided to move his army across Meadowbrook Creek instead which would allow him time to cross without being detected by Johnston. On July 24th, 1865, just before dawn, Sherman's army moved forward across Meadowbrook Creek undetected by Johnston until it reached Griffin Landing about 7 miles upstream from where they had been planned; then they marchedsouthwest towards Mobile Bayou where they were met by Confederate forces led by General Robert Ewell who succeeded in driving them back across Mobile Bayou and into Tennessee
Canton was founded by the Choctaws in 1806 as a trading post on the lower Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1814 it had a population of 1,500. In that year, the United States Congress constructed Fort Beauregard at Canton to protect American traders operating on the river. By 1821, Canton had become an important commercial center on the Mississippi River. The town's growth continued during the 1830s and 1840s, when it became known for its cotton crops and for its distribution of goods to Native Americans living along the river. By 1850, Canton had reached its peak as a commercial center on the Mississippi River. However, economic difficulties caused by factors such as overpopulation and deforestation caused many of Canton's businesses to close in the 1850s. Afterward, Canton declined until it regained some importance in early 19th century America as a terminus for steamboats traveling downriver from Memphis to New Orleans.
