Canton is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The name "Canton" is from a Choctaw term meaning "a place where cotton was grown." The first white settlers in what is now Canton were Jesse James's family who arrived in 1819. They founded a sawmill and gristmill on the Hiwassee River. By 1840, there were about eighty people living in the village. In 1845-46, three men from Illinois named John Auld and George Stephenson built a steamboat called the Enterprise on the Arkansas River to carry goods upriver to Canton. They named their boat after local dignitary Caleb Strong (1786-1854), an early settler who had donated land for cantonization purposes. In 1849, Darius Dixon moved to Canton from Natchez with his wife Polly and two children under six years old. He was one of thirteen men who came overland from Missouri by way of Tennessee in Wagontown wagon train led by General Robert Ewing duringthe Mexican–American War (1846-48). Dixon's company fought at Monterrey and Santa Anna Bridge before reaching Mexico City on November 29, 1847. Afterward they traveled through central Mexico until they reached Zacatecas on January 4, 1848; thence they passed through Vera Cruz to San Francisco de los Baños on February 12th before arriving at La Bahía de Tijuana on March 25th; thence via Tabasco to Monterey Bay aboard HMS Beagle October 22nd 1800 arriving December 2nd 1800 off California Coast near Point Reyes National Seashore September 13th 1802 according as recorded by Humboldt Expedition captain Don José Nieto y Legazpi He next served as justice of peace for Pike County (Jackson) from 1850 until he resigned due to ill health in 1861 Dixon died at his home near Canton December 3rd 1861 aged 83 years General Andrew Jackson appointed him executor of his will two days later which made him one of only five Americans ever appointed US Postmaster General without having been elected or appointed thereto by Congress

Canton is a town in Jones County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Jones County since 1830. The first permanent settler in what is now Canton was Ebenezer Harmon who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the Missisipi River and named it Harmon's Ferry. In 1818, Harmon moved his family to what is now Canton and began trading goods with other pioneer families near present-day Jackson. He also founded a gristmill in 1821 which became one of the largest mills in Mississippi. In 1830, when Sumter County was created from parts of Jones and Stark Counties, Canton became its county seat. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in 1840 and held court until 1850 when it was replaced by a larger structure on Broadway which still stands today. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Canton sided with Confederate forces over Union forces and lost many residents including many eminent citizens such as Jabez Waddy (a doctor) and Joseph Milliken (an attorney). However, most of the town's buildings were destroyed during fighting which left few survivors to rebuild during Reconstruction years later. In 1921, Community College of Mississippi opened its doors in Canton after being founded by evangelical Christians seeking to provide training for black Mississippians as well as white Americans interested in learning about their culture. The college continues to serve as an important part of Canton's culture today with more than 30 departments teaching various courses related to African American history, literature & art history, world cultures & religions, English language arts & literacy development/academic advising services etc.; all while maintaining an open enrollment policy making it easy for everyone to attend regardless their academic level or interest levels!
