Canton, Mississippi is a town in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Canton" is derived from a Cherokee word meaning "place where the water boils." The first white settlers in Canton were pioneers who arrived in 1819. They built log cabins and began to farm land. In 1825, they organized a Methodist church and named it after their home town of Columbus in Georgia. The first school was built in 1827 and the first post office was established in 1830. In 1840, the Canton Baptist Church was founded and soon became one of the most important churches in southern Mississippi. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Canton. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell visited Canton and ordered its destruction as part of his plan to quash northern rebellion. Most of the buildings were destroyed during this time but some remain today including the Presbyterian Church which serves as a museum today. During World War II (1939-1945), Canton served as an air raid shelter for Jackson metropolitan area residents because of strategic importance due to its location on Interstate 35W betweenJackson and Memphis. Today, canton continues to be an important center for commerce with a variety of businesses located throughout its five blocks downtown including restaurants, banks/finance companies/brokerships/mortgage companies etc., arts & crafts stores along with several large box stores such as Sears & Roebuck
The Canton area was originally a part of the Creek Nation. The area was split off from Alabama in 1813, and became a part of Mississippi in 1816. The town was founded by boatmen who took up land near the mouth of the Yazoo River. By 1850, the population had increased to 1,000 people and the town had a cotton gin, Store House Hotel, and two schools. In 1865, Canton became a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. It lost its status as a town after it seceded from Mississippi in 1870.
