Canton was founded in 1821 by Captain John Ross and his family. The original town was located on the banks of the Opa-Locka River, about three miles west of present-day Canton. In 1830, Captain Ross donated land to build a courthouse and jail. The first post office was established in 1832. By 1840, the town had a population of fifty-six people. It became a county seat in 1857 and an incorporated city in 1890.
