Canton, Mississippi is a town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The name "Canton" come from the Choctaw word can'ta (meaning "to see"). The town was founded by General James Caldwell in 1814 as a trading post on the Yazoo River. The first white residents of Canton were Methodist missionaries who came to preach and proselytize among the local Native Americans in 1819. They named their new settlement after George Washington's home country of Virginia, America's first capital city and then its most important cotton-growing region. In 1830, Colonel William Goodloe built a gristmill on what is now known as Main Street and began to sell flour and other goods from his store to settlers in nearby Tupelo and Meridianville. In 1835, canton became an incorporated village with a government supported by two trustees chosen by the general assembly. At that time it had about thirty homes and one school; but within four years it had increased to over one hundred people with a store, five churches (one Baptist), three banks (the First National Bank of Corinthianburg, Union Bank of Canton, Citizens' Loan Company) and three schools—all private academies run either by teachers or parishioners themselves. In 1840–41 General James Caldwell led an army against Natchez Indians in what became known as the Battle of Canton Bridge; he again served as military commander during Indian Removal operations beginning in1846 which culminated with the Treaty of Fort Gibson which ended most Indian resistance to white settlement throughout eastern Arkansas and Alabama except for Cherokee Nation east of Muskogee Creek. Along with much else during this period that shook Upstate Mississippi,[2] Canton experienced rapid growth following Indian removal – its population increased from 1,500 to 10,000 between 1840 and 1850.[3] Afterward there was little civilian development until recent decades when descendants have restored some buildings including mills dating back to before 1830 while others are being rebuilt using modern materials A number of items associated with African American history are also found within or around Canton: including prayer books used during spiritual services at black churches throughout Memphis during the 1930s[4], diplomas awarded to African American students at various institutions acrossMississippi beginning in 1941,[5],[6],[7],[8] posters & T-shirts worn locally during Soul Train TV shows such as Masterpiece Theatre airing fromJackson from 1984 until 2000,[9],[10] photos & memorabilia documenting life within many black churches/mosques throughout Greater Jackson County starting circa 1965
Canton was founded in 1832 by the Canton-Lafayette Company. The company built a cotton plantation on the present site of Canton, Mississippi. The first white settler in what is now Canton was John McGee. In 1835, McGee and his family moved to the area and started a cotton plantation. In 1836, McGee and his son James bought another cotton plantation near Canton from Moseley & Co. For many years, these plantations were the only sources of food for the townspeople.
