In 1896, the Canton Rifle Club organized a hunt for a new rifle. The club's president, James A. Mellon, donated two shotguns and four rifles to the cause. The rifle hunt was successful and in 1897 the Canton Rifle Club formed a shooting society which still meets annually. In 1902, the club founded an agricultural society with help from Mellon and other philanthropists.

After reconstruction ended any hope of racial harmony among whites and African Americans occurred primarily because economic conditions did not improve until after World War II when Blacks migrated into Jackson County seeking employment opportunities opened up due to technology advancements such as television production plants (Canton being one such plant).
