The history of Canton can be traced back to 1802 when a group of white farmers and their Native American allies founded the town on the banks of the Yazoo River. In 1830, an act by the state legislature designated Cottonwood Creek as the site for Canton. That same year, General Andrew Jackson was elected president and organized a militia to suppress any slave rebellions that may have occurred in the area. In 1835, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest Purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) along Cottonwood Creek from John Wesley Powell for $5 per acre ($10 million at current prices). With this purchase, Forrest became one of the first white men to own land in what is now Hinds County. The early years for Canton were difficult; there were no schools or churches until 1851 when a Methodist Episcopal Church was built and dedicated by Mrs. Lydia Childers Wright. By 1870-71, there were three stores and two blacksmiths operating in Canton. A post office called Banks was established at this time and served residents until 1907 when it closed because of lack of mail service between Corinth and Starkville due to railroads being built right through town during that time period! In 1892-93 Indian traders started trading with local farmers around present day Corinth who would then trade goods they produced back home with Indians living near them on reservations in Missouri and Illinois Territory (now Oklahoma). This trade provided some needed income for farmers who could not afford to buy food from outside sources.$2 million worth of crops were grown in Cass County during these years which helped support many families! A large cotton gin facility was built by J & G Stephenson at present day Greenwood near where US Hwy 51 meets I-20 about 1915-16 resulting in increased demand for cotton products throughout America$1 million worth of new housing development took place during these years including several thousand homes constructed on major cotton highways!
