The town quickly became a slave market for African Americans working on plantations in south Mississippi and Alabama. In 1837, white residents voted to secede fromAlabama and form their own state, which they called "Mississippi". In 1840, the federal government moved military forces intoJackson County to suppress slavery and defenders of slavery burned down buildings in Canton that supported abolitionist activities. During Reconstruction (1868–1877), Canton developed as an industrial center with many breweries and lumberyards as well as a large textile industry. Many African Americans worked these businesses through Cooperative Union mills until they were closed by white supremacists during Reconstruction era race riots that followed allegations of racial discrimination against black workers at these mills. Aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement led to increased scrutiny of Jim Crow laws throughout south Mississippi and eventually led to significant change within Canton's business community when its local government enacted ordinances prohibiting discrimination against African Americans beginning in 1960s

Canton is a city in Lowndes County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lowndes County and part of the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area. The city began as a post office called Canton in 1869. Its name derived from its location on the Ohio River near where it crossed into Lowndes County. The original town site was along Red Bayou. In early 1880, the post office moved to what is now Canton's central square, which had been developed for that purpose by pioneer farmers near present-day downtown. In 1881, a railroad was built through Lowndes County and Canton became one of its local rail centers; it still remains one today. In 1870s and 1800s, many African Americans worked as sharecroppers in nearby Mobile and other rural areas such as this one in Lower Mississippi Valley between Memphis and Jackson because there were no real opportunities for them north of Meridian Hills/Jackson on the Alabama side of the river. Many whites also engaged in agriculture hereabouts but did not own land or build homes until after Reconstruction ended with Indian removal efforts started by General Ulysses S Grant under President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 – these operations ultimately led to significant changes within lowland white society that continue to this day among some black Mississippians who have ancestry heretofore undiscovered
Canton was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson as a military post on the Tennessee River. The town served as a transportation and supply depot for the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered, Canton became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America. In 1892, Canton was renamed to Mississippi after statehood.
