Canton is located in southeastern Mississippi, and was founded in 1819. The town has a population of over 50,000 people today and is the county seat of Tate County. Canton was originally named for the canton of Switzerland, which at that time extended from what is now German Village to what is now the city of Jackson. The name change occurred because it was decided that Swiss immigrants would not be able to pronounce "Canton" as their native language did. The first settler in Canton was Drury Lewis, who arrived in 1819. By 1830, there were only three houses remaining in the original town when a post office was established. The first postmaster was John Aiken. In 1851, one mile west of Canton on State Route 9 lay an area known as Hillcrest Township which had been purchased by Colonel James Hogg from Andrew Nicholson for $2 per acre. This township later became part of Tate County and incorporated as a village in 1865. In 1881, Canton joined the American Civil War with Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee while Mississippi remained Unionist.
